The Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran) is located in southwest Asia, in the Middle East. The name "Iran" has been in use natively since the Sassanian era and has come into use internationally from 1935, before which the country was known to the Western world as Persia. Iran has a rich and lavish history and is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations.

Iran is the 18th largest country in the world in terms of area at 1,648,195 km2 and has land boundaries consisting of 5,440 km. Iran is bordered by 15 neighboring countries. It is bordered on the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, on the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the west by Iraq and on the northwest by Turkey.

Iran is one of the rare countries in the world which has four distinctive seasons. In the north, it is covered with evergreen forests parallel to its beautifully serene sea making its climate most pleasant. In the south, Iran leads to Persian Gulf with beautiful and appealing palm trees and a hot and humid climate. To the east of Iran, you can find hot desserts with running sand and nights full of stars. The west of this vast land is covered with mountains high in the sky which attract the attention of every visitor.



Tehran, the country's capital and largest city is the political, cultural, commercial and industrial center of the nation. The country is divided into 31 provinces, each governed by an appointed governor.

In the past few decades, important programs and initiatives have been launched in Iran for promoting science and technology such as Vision 2025. Many outstanding and significant advances have been made through education and training in almost all aspects of research during the past 35 years. This encompasses research in different sectors, including nanotechnology, biotechnology, aerospace, nuclear sciences, medical development and stem cells and cloning.

Vision 2025 was planned to promote the position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in national, regional and international levels, so that Iran can become a developed country within the next twenty years, with the leading economic, scientific and technical stand in the region.
